NEIGHBORHOOD CONFRONTS ANOTHER SPIKE IN HOME BURGLARIES

Since early November, there has been a series of home burglaries and attempted home burglaries in Druid Hills. This follows a similar spike earlier in the fall.

With holidays on the horizon, we must be especially vigilant!

Please be aware of what is happening in and around our neighborhood. The only real way to fight this type of crime is to stay informed and communicate with each other and the police. If you see anything suspicious, please call 911. Don’t hesitate even if you are unsure.

Below is a description of the perpetrators involved in an attempted burglary on Sunday, November 17, on Princeton Way, and a burglary on Monday morning, November 18, on Burlington Road.

One suspect is approximately 6’ feet tall; the other around 5’ 9’’ tall. One wore a red jacket with dark pants; the other wore a white shirt and dark pants with an NFL blue and red styled toboggan. Both appeared to be African-American. They arrived in a blue (could be black) compact car, possibly a Honda Fit. The car had a New Orleans Saints sticker on the back.

Twice in the past five months, outgoing mail, including checks I had written, has been stolen from my mailbox. Forged copies of my checks were presented at local banks. The bank informed me that this has happened recently to a number of people in the area.

    > Don’t put checks in your mailbox, and don’t leave mail in the box overnight!

For those of you who are away from home through most of the day and returning around 6PM, remember to reach out to your neighbors for support. There are so many workmen, AT&T, cable, garbage collection, landscaping, students, postmen, UPS delivery and various folks cutting through these neighborhoods. Some of these crimes are of opportunity but others carefully planned ahead. Talk to your next door neighbors to let them know if you’re leaving town during the holiday season. Turn on different lights and yes, get a timer or someone to stop by to pick up your mail or newspapers . A barking dog may detour a prowler but an alarm system should also be activated while you’re at home or not. Have your local police numbers handy and if you see something suspicious, call the police or your neighbors. Use email to communicate everyone’s address and contact info. Hope this helps and remember to lock your doors, windows and cars to avoid strangers from taking advantage of the situation,
